Crash injures two in Jefferson

CASSOPOLIS - Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports his deputies handled a traffic crash with injuries on Friday, Aug. 29, at approximately 12:40 p.m.
The crash occurred at the M-62 and Davis Lake Street intersection in Jefferson Township.
Emergency personnel responded and found a single vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree in a nearby yard.
The driver, Russell Brown, 47, of Edwardsburg, and his passenger, Sandra Stow, 45, of Cassopolis, were both trapped in the vehicle and required extrication.
Both were taken to Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind., for treatment.
Initial investigation of the scene shows Brown had been traveling north on M-62, approaching Davis Lake Street, when he attempted to pass a vehicle turning left at the intersection.
Brown left the roadway on the right shoulder, lost control, then traveled up into the nearby yard, striking the tree. Seatbelts were used by both parties.
Edwardsburg Fire and Ambulance, along with Life Care Ambulance, assisted on scene.
The accident remains under investigation at this time.
Crash at Five Points happened Saturday
CASSOPOLIS - Sheriff Underwood Jr. also reports his deputies are investigating a traffic crash that occurred Saturday, Aug. 30, at 12:55 a.m. on Old 205 near Five Points Road in Mason Township.
Deputies reported that a vehicle driven by Mark Richards, 45, of Cassopolis, was south-west bound on Old 205 when he passed another vehicle at a high rate of speed.
The vehicle then went back into his lane and ran off the road to the right.
The vehicle then hit an embankment, which caused it to overturn onto its roof.
The subject refused medical treatment from the ambulance on scene but had minor injuries from the traffic crash.
It was determined that alcohol was a factor in the traffic crash.
The subject was wearing a seatbelt.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by the Porter Township Ambulance and Fire Department.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
Deputies withheld the subject's name until arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court.
