Top seed Edwardsburg hosted Berrien Springs in a semifinal Lakeland Conference Tournament soccer game Monday and advanced to the championship with a 4-1 triumph over the Shamrocks.
Berrien Springs (6-8-2) stopped the Eddies’ scoreless streak by conference foes this year by scoring with 24:10 showing on the scoreboard as Shamrock senior Oluwaseunt Idowu was open after a throw-in to take advantage on a 10-yard left foot well-placed shot.
A penalty kick by classmate Dustin Bushouse went over the top bar nearly two minutes earlier.
“Berrien Springs played us tough the entire game and took advantage of a good opportunity to lose our shutout streak by burying the shot to keep it close at halftime,” noted Edwardsburg coach Ryan Rosenkranz.
Scoring and showing the proper way to convert a penalty kick was Edwardsburg junior Andy Boyles, who capitalized after just over three minutes of play with a low left bottom corner shot past senior goal keeper David Walter to give the Eddies an early advantage.
The final tally of the first half came near the halfway point as Boyles passed to classmate Marcus Albrecht in stride for a short missile to dent the net.
It took the Eddies 35 minutes to increase their one goal lead as two seniors named Dan scored on a direct kick as Lauten found Holston in front to redirect the ball past the net line for a 3-1 score.
An excellent corner kick goal concluded the scoring with 3:46 remaining as seniors Dominic Catanzarite and Trent Bybee connected with the latter heading the ball from in front to secure the victory.
Edwardsburg (13-2-0) had 15 shots in each half with Walter making 15 saves altogether and also had 11 corner kicks to two for the visitors.
The Eddies will face conference nemesis Bridgman Wednesday to attempt to win both the regular season and tournament titles and then will travel to Benton Harbor for the Division 2 tournament next week with the winner facing Niles.
Edwardsburg won the Division 3 District last year where Berrien Springs will compete as they travel to South Haven next Monday.
“We have good senior leadership on this team and will be ready for the tournament giving our best effort,” conclude Lesch.

The third time was not a charm for the Brandywine soccer team against Cassopolis Monday night.
The Bobcats were hoping that they could finally break through against the Rangers in a Lakeland Conference consolation match.
But instead, the Rangers scored their third one-goal victory over Brandywine.
Brendan Westrick scored 17 seconds into the second half and Cassopolis was able to make it stand up for a 1-0 victory.
After stealing the ball from a Brandywine player right after the first half kickoff, Westrick dribbled down the left side, commencing his run in his own half. He beat four defenders before curling a beautiful kick 5-yards inside the penalty box that hit the far post and bounced in.
The match was close with both teams having a few close chances. The Cassopolis defense was able to contain the Brandywine breakaway attacks.
Agust Olafsson was stellar on defense for the Rangers, repeatedly thwarting the Brandywine assault. Cassopolis goalie John Simpson worked well with his defenders to preserve the shutout.
Tony Jones and Blaise Suseland were solid in the middle and aggressively fought for every lose ball thereby giving the Rangers important possession in the midfield.
Brandywine came close to scoring a couple of times in the last 10 minutes when it pressed relentlessly to get the equalizer.
Brandywine juniors, Jacob Wieger and David Dykema both had outstanding games. Wieger and Matt Liebetrau both had great shooting opportunities but both placed their shots over the crossbar.
The Bobcats co-captain and goalie, Jason Andrews made great saves throughout the match and often spearheaded Brandywine’s attack with his booming kicks.
Cass goes on the road to play Coloma on Wednesday while the Bobcats host Lake Michigan Catholic.

Buchanan scored quick and often Wednesday (Oct. 7) to take an 8-0 Lakeland Conference first round tournament win over visiting Cassopolis.
Tony Payne hit the Bucks’ first goal of the afternoon 18 seconds into the match.
Buchanan continued to pound the ball into the goal taking a 7-0 first half lead.
Richie Reed finished with a hat trick, scoring all three of his goals in the first half.
Tony Payne knocked home the first two scores for the Bucks, followed by two of Reed’s goals.
Ryan Catalano scored a goal and picked up four assist, while Tye Payne and Tyler Powers each added to the scoring.
Buchanan finished the afternoon taking 12 shots on goal with Ranger goalkeeper John Simpson coming up with six saves.
The Rangers had eight shots on goal with Steven VanAlstine making three saves for the Bucks.
Powers’ goal, and the Bucks eighth score of the game, came with 21 minutes to play in the second half to end the match with the mercy rule taking affect.
